This piece (“ the in-between”) aims to express the purity of the complex pain, confusion, dissociation, anger, deer-in-the-headlights feelings experienced in my grief, loss and bereavement journey; specifically as it relates to loss by addiction. During a time of exploration and experimentation, I created this work while experiencing intense dissolution of self and identity, clawing back to reality one way or another and finding ways to desperately convey the intensity of the things I was feeling.
Using oil-based gloss paint in this work, felt necessary to allow for a distinct and sturdy texture to reflect the discomfort of this stage of my journey - in which, I find myself back in at times - the chasm that opens up to reveal the depth of what these experiences can teach me. To adapt, recalibrate and grow, but to be open to the necessity of darkness in our personal evolutions.
