This piece (“ chaos ensues “) expresses the phase of anxiousness, overwhelm and dysphoria as a result of developing and contradictory intrusive thoughts, with particular relevance to the early isolated periods of immense complicated grief; when the dust settles, when no-one is checking in and you are left to make sense of this new world, and your place in it. Removed from body, and a sense of grounding, the mind takes control and all you can do is let it…chaos ensues.

“The Masks We Wear“ series has a particular focus on the strategies we use to hide our insecurities and human contradictions; particularly during immediate trauma response and survival - where social norms and pressure to oblige with the Status Quo exaggerate feelings of loneliness and isolation.

This is a developing series of works, evidencing Helen’s continued exploration of the use of texture and colour to express the experience of identity dysphoria, in the wake of parental bereavement - a way of learning to rebuild following the sudden loss of both parents during the COVID-19 lockdowns.
